The Central Govt. Sponsored Integrated Child Development Service Scheme Programme was launched on 2nd October 1975 in two projects namely Dharani (Amravati) and Dharavi (Mumbai) with a view to improving the nutritional and dietary status of children and reducing the rate of child mortality and malnutrition. There are a total of 21 Integrated Child Development Service Scheme projects, out of which 2 are tribal and 19 are rural projects, 5375 Anganwadi centres are operational.
The following services are being provided to the beneficiaries of Anganwadi under the Integrated Child Development Service Scheme.

- Immunisation
- Health Check-up
- Referral Services
- Non-Formal Pre-School Education
- Health and Nutrition Education
Objectives of the Integrated Child Development Service Scheme –
- To improve the nutritional and health status of children in the age group of 0 to 6 years.
- To lay the foundation for proper physical, mental and social development of children.
- To reduce the rate of child mortality, malnutrition and school dropout.
- To achieve effective coordination of policy and implementation across various departments to promote child development.
- To enhance the capacity of mothers to attend to the general health and nutritional needs of their children through proper nutrition and health education.
